The Parent Empowerment Program (PEP) is a home-based early intervention and prevention program for children from birth to three years old. The program works to empower parents to become advocates for themselves and their children in the areas of medical, educational and social service needs. The coordinated set of services and support also includes individual family home visits and center-based group activities, as well as helps families build an active social support network.
Communities Served: Rogers Park, Austin, Lake County, South Suburbs in Cook County and West Englewood.
Participants Served: 329
Outcomes:
The '08-'09 school year witnessed the high school graduation of three young adults who began in the PEP program as youngsters. They are now enrolled in community college, two as nursing students and two with an interest in a degree in Mortuary Science. Proving again what researchers have shown for decades; giving parents and their children the critical early childhood development skills they need at the earliest stages yields lifelong benefits.
