Extended Family Support

The Extended Family Support Program provides home-based, family-centered casework services to families in which one or more children have been abandoned in the care of a relative caregiver (extended family member). The program is designed to prevent children from entering state custody by enabling extended family members to establish a legal care-giving relationship (private guardianship) with the child and to obtain the resources necessary to meet their family's needs.

Community Served: Cook County

Participants Served: 106

Outcomes:

  • Families achieved guardianship of child-relatives 74% of the time.
  • Families received Public Aid benefit for their child-relatives 71% of the time.
  • 100% of the children do not enter the foster care system.

Clients in ChildServ's Extended Family Support Program say:

  • "I was so happy that they care so much. Just with getting beds, stuff for the kids that I was not able to get."
  • "They helped me get my nephew's birth certificate."
